Handyman & Contractor Invoicing

Handymen and contractors bill labor, materials, permits, sometimes equipment rental. The invoice needs to show it all so customers understand where their money went.

Labor + materials structure

Handyman job invoice: 1. Labor — kitchen cabinet installation (8 hours) Qty: 8 Rate: $60.00 2. Materials — wood stain (2 cans) Qty: 2 Rate: $35.00 3. Hardware — hinges and handles Qty: 1 Rate: $120.00 4. Materials markup (15%) Qty: 1 Rate: $23.25 5. Building permit filing Qty: 1 Rate: $150.00 Subtotal: $888.25 Tax (7%): $62.18 Total: $950.43 Payment terms: 50% due upon start, 50% upon completion Notes: Warranty: workmanship 1 year. Materials per manufacturer warranty.

Set labor rates by job type

General handyman: $50-75/hour. Specialized work (electrical, plumbing): $85-150/hour. Itemize which applies to each part of the job.

Material markups are fair

Mark up materials 15-25%. You're not just buying them. You're choosing the right product, managing inventory, and hauling them to the job. Put the markup on the invoice separately so it's visible.

Permits and unexpected costs

If the job needs a permit, that's a separate line item. If you hit unexpected structural issues, send a change order before proceeding. Invoice it after they approve.
