Pet Sitter & Dog Walker Invoicing: Rates, Templates, and Getting Paid

March 2026

Most pet sitters start out getting paid in cash or Venmo with a "just send me whatever" approach. That works fine when you have three clients. When you have fifteen, it's chaos. You lose track of who paid, who owes you for last week's walks, and whether that holiday surcharge was communicated before or after they booked.

A simple invoice solves all of this. It creates a paper trail, makes your business look professional, and — most importantly — makes it clear exactly what the client owes and when. Pet owners appreciate it too. They'd rather get a clean invoice than try to remember how many visits you did last week.

What pet sitters should invoice for

Weekly vs. monthly invoicing

For daily dog walking clients, invoice weekly. Friday afternoon is ideal — the client sees the invoice while the week's walks are still fresh in their mind, and you get paid before the weekend. For occasional pet sitting (vacation stays, weekend trips), invoice the day the service ends.

Monthly invoicing works for clients with predictable, recurring schedules (e.g., 5 walks per week, every week). You can agree on a flat monthly rate and invoice on the 1st. This is simpler for both sides but requires trust that the schedule stays consistent.

Sample invoice

Line items for a week of dog walking + pet sitting: 1. Dog walk — 30 min (Mon-Fri) Qty: 5 Rate: $25.00 2. Drop-in visit — feeding + meds (Sat) Qty: 1 Rate: $35.00 3. Overnight pet sitting (Sat-Sun) Qty: 1 Rate: $75.00 4. Additional pet surcharge (2nd dog) Qty: 7 Rate: $10.00 Subtotal: $305.00 Tax (0%): $0.00 Total: $305.00 Payment terms: Due on receipt Notes: Walks included Cooper (Golden Retriever) and Biscuit (Beagle). Medication administered Saturday morning per instructions.

Setting holiday rates

Major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, July 4th) should be billed at 1.5x to 2x your standard rate. Communicate this at the start of the relationship, not the week before Thanksgiving. Put it in your service agreement, and it won't be a surprise on the invoice.

Some pet sitters also charge a premium for school breaks and summer vacation periods since demand spikes. That's reasonable, but be transparent about it. A "peak period surcharge" line item on the invoice is better than a vague rate increase.

Getting paid on time

"Due on receipt" is the standard for pet care. You're providing a hands-on service to their animal — this isn't a Net 30 situation. If a client consistently pays late, require prepayment for the next booking period. Most pet owners are happy to prepay a week of walks at a time.

Accept multiple payment methods. Venmo and Zelle are fine for pet care, but always send the invoice first. The invoice is the record. The payment method is just the delivery mechanism.
